Farm accounting for Filipino rice farmers — built from research, and connected to the agriculture offices that serve them
Most rice farmers only find out after the harvest whether a cropping season made money. RFAS gives them a simple way to record every expense and see their real profit — and gives municipal, provincial and regional agriculture offices a direct line to the farmers in their area.
The project
RFAS grew out of research with rice farmers in Agusan del Sur — a qualitative study titled "Exploring the unheard voices of rice farmers in Agusan del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines", presented at ICARI 2025. The farmers' message was clear: they spend on seeds, fertilizer, labor and equipment all season, but rarely have a record of it, so it is hard to know whether they are earning, to plan the next planting, or to prove their operations when applying for loans and assistance.
We built RFAS to answer that. Farmers register with their region, province, municipality and barangay, then record their farms, crop cycles, expenses and income, and get financial reports that show their margins. Municipal, provincial and regional administrators each have their own access to follow the farmers in their area and to publish news that matters to them — pest advisories, production-loan openings and registration drives.
The system has been presented to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga and the Department of Agriculture's AFRDEN Caraga, and introduced to local government units including Alegria (Surigao del Norte), San Francisco and Bunawan (Agusan del Sur) and Barobo (Surigao del Sur).
